Pencil Day - win Staedtler pencils! *Now closed & winner announced in the comments*

Ok, keep calm, it's finally here.... welcome to National Stationery Week!  Day one is Pencil Day and I have some fab products from Staedtler to tell you about!

Pencils, pencils, pencils, it's Pencil Day!

If you went to school here in the UK during the 80's and 90's you will definitely remember using a yellow and black Staedtler HB pencil in your exercise books.  I remember one of my teachers used to use a stanley knife to take a strip of wood off the end of these pencils so you could write your name on it in pen and that way no one could steal your pencil and claim it as their own!  Receiving a pack of these pencils in the post triggered a huge wave of nostalgia in me and I have very fond memories of them.

Colouring in

I brought myself a set of Staedtler Noris pencil crayons back in January to use in my adult colouring book and when I decorate my planner pages.  I love how colourful they look and they are really pigmented so you quickly get the colour onto the page.  I have used cheaper colouring pencils before (like pound shop cheap!) and I found I had to keep going over the same bit time and time again to make the colour stronger so the Noris pencils are a joy to use!

I also like how blendable these pencils are, they give you the option to add tones and highlights to your pictures and then smudge them around a little until you get the desired effect.  I gave the snow a blue tint around the edges in the four seasons picture above and the rain cloud has a grey hue to it as well.  Using these pencils is a lot of fun when you are feeling artistic!

  • Both sets of pencils are brand new and unused but I have taken them out of their packaging to photograph them. The winner will receive five HB pencils and twelve Noris colouring pencils as pictured in this post.

  2. I loved the start of term every year, new bag, new shoes and a new pencil case. I used to have a big pink furry one, the amount of pens that thing could hold, I used to spray it with my mums perfume. Until she caught me that is!

  3. I remember my time in boarding school. The start of a new term always made me feel homesick but after a few days I was always comforted by the adventures my friends and I had to go through escaping being sent by the senior students and also trying to be tough while still escaping punishment. Those were fun days.
Thanks for the chance to win.

  6. When I was in first grade, about 6 years old, I was a quick learner (Ok, still am) and would finish my work quickly and try to sit quietly waiting. I would get tired of waiting for everyone else to also finish and did what comes natural to me.
I talk. I would talk to the student next to me, I would talk to the student behind me, the student in front of me. I was, and still aim, friendly to everyone.
Our teacher was not so fond of my friendly ways, at least when I was being friendly in the middle of our work.
After a few times, she started building a wall around me.

So at the time of day that we needed to do some desk work, she would bring over some cardboard brinks we had in the play area, and build a three sided wall, taller then me, on my desk.
I still talk a lot. To just about anyone.
Sorry, Miss Clapper, you did not train that out of me.

  7. I remember always wanting to be a teacher helper in elementary school and helping grade papers after I finished my work. I still have a few letters from my teachers saying how much they enjoyed me in class and my help. Ahhh the good old days!

  9. I remember starting back to school and Easons had released "Friends" stationery. They had everything. So of course I had to have it all. I thought I was the bees knees when I was allowed it and I kept my notes in tip top shape that whole year!

  12. Gosh loads of memories from school but one of my favourites was our school assembly when I was pretending to be the reporter interviewing Martina Navratilova. I made my clipboard myself out of a toy chopping board and bulldog clip with a pen tied onto the clip with a bit of string, and a few sheets of paper. Homemade stationary success!

  14. The memory i am going to share wasn't funny at the time but i can laugh about it now...

When i was in primary school and i was about 9 or 10 at the time, a boy who i was friends with had asked me to be his girlfriend but i told him no. Well i dont think he liked that and i remember turning around because i heard him shouting im gonna get you and chasing me with a glass eye...a glass eye!!...yes you read right a glass eye! I never knew he had a glass eye and yeah it was his!! It was like something in a horror movie, well that's what it felt like at the time...It frightened me that much that i nearly peed my pants!!
That memory has stayed with me until this very day and i think it always will but thankfully i can laugh about it now! :)
    hugs

  15. I was nine years old in the late 1950s. We used to go on school nature walks as our school was in the country and close to a wood. One day we were on a nature walk in the wood and came across a bird's nest containing eggs. We were fascinated by this and our teacher talked about it later in class. The next day somebody found all the eggs smashed on the ground and all us school kids were the chief culprits. We didn't know who had smashed them so our headmaster let us all off telling us it was a cruel person who smashed them. We never did find out who smashed those eggs.

  18. A bit of a girlie one, but I spent 5 years fancying the bum off the year hunk (he was lovely too and although knew I liked him, he wasn't laughing at me and took time for a friendly chat now and again). In the last 2 years of school (this is going back to the late-1980s, I had my Art class with him as an option as they were then) so really looked forward to it (no wonder I passed my Art even though I'm not very good). The last school disco came and he was djing for it. My best-friend said "I'm going to ask Chris if he'll ask you for a dance". I said "You've no chance, he'll never agree to that". 10 minutes later, I had a tap on my shoulder and he was stood there. We had 2 dances before he went to carry on with the djing. Still see his Mum in town although he's moved away now.

  19. My memory came to mind seeing the colouring pencils. In geography class at secondary school (late seventies into early eighties) I used sit in front of a boy who's mission in life seemed to be ways of winding up the geography teacher at each and every opportunity. On this day we had to draw how ox-bow lakes were formed and colour in our drawings. We were all quiet because that was how classrooms in those days worked. Well the lad behind decided that the teachers attention should be on us rather than putting up the notes on the blackboard for the next class. His way of getting attention was to flick pieces of rolled up paper using his ruler at Mr Walkington's back and acting all innocent when the teacher turned around. When the second missile actually his the teacher on his back he turned round so quickly and threw the blackboard rubber so hard and fast at the boy behind me. It whipped past be so quickly that I felt the draught. Wasn't the last time I had to keep my head down in geography class :)

  20. I used to love back to school time and getting to pick all the new goodies for school. One memory from elementary school (I tell this one to my kids every halloween)...back then we got to carve a pumpkin at school and my good friend was scooping out the inside of the pumpkin (we call them guts 😉) and she put gobs in her hands and squeezed them between her fingers and said ooga booga. My kids think it's so funny that I have to re-enact it each year for them. 😀

  22. My memory of school life starts on day 1 of secondary school. Kitted out in a new uniform, I arrived at school to find that my black blazer looked navy compared to all the others. No doubt they purchased it at the school shop but money was short so we purchased it cheaply elsewhere. For 3 years, I endured the comments of my fellow pupils and teachers alike. At the start of my 4th term, my mother bought me a new blazer, again not from the school shop. I scrutinized it, compared it against my other blazer and yes, it looked black. Went to school, stood in assembly on the first day back and nuts ... it had a very dark green hue. I've always since bought my own children uniform from the school shop :)

  23. Oh I loved getting new stationery every new year. Pens, pencils and the white plastic rubbers that were German and the best. The only new thing I is didn't have each time was my pencil case. For some reason this blue furry pencil case followed me from one school year to another and one day, many years later when I'd left and worked in the local solicitors, I was sent to see a client as the solicitor was busy. low and behold it was a lad from my school year. When I went to take some notes old faithful happened to be with me. Yes, the same blue pencil case. And he happened to comment "you've still got that blue pencil case you had at school?" Now how on earth had he known or noticed that as he'd never been in my class? Wonder if he noticed me from afarm *Blush* !

  24. One of my favourite lasting memories of school has to be when I was mid way through primary.
My mum had been a class helper, She said she would help out my teacher by showing us about fires and safety.
We all went on a visit to my house where my mum had a bonfire going we sat round and did melted marshmellows over the fire and talked about how fires worked and staying safe around them. My mum said when it had cooled down she would collect some charcoal sticks for us to draw with for art the next day.My teacher let me stay at home when everyone went back to school I felt so lucky! As it was 45 minutes before school finished for the day and I got to sit and share a very yummy box of chocolates that my teacher had bought my mum as a thank you!! I felt so grown up it was epic!
