My first Filofax was an A5 Apex which I started using in January 2013 but after six months I was tempted into moving down to a personal size binder. I thought A5 was too big and bulky and I was smitten with my sleek and stylish yellow Original.
The persuasive little voice was now telling me that A5 wasn't big and bulky it meant I would have more room for my notes, reminders and to do lists, plenty of space for my ideas and doodles and what's more I could use my Kokeshi girl dividers from Cute Organizing again!

I knew what I wanted, an A5 Original in fluoro pink. I had enough prize money to buy one and they were in stock too! There was nothing stopping me... except for one thing. The voice of reason who said to me if I moved back up to A5 then all of my personal size filos would suddenly be redundant. I wouldn't be able to chop and change between them when the mood took me and they would all be sat on the shelf being unused and unloved.
The voice of reason continued, why mess with my current planning system? It was working wasn't it? I was getting things done, just because we were about to start a new year didn't mean I had to change things up. What if I ordered the A5 and then missed personal size? What if it messed with my system and hindered me instead of helping me?
In the end I ordered the fluoro pink Original in personal size and I am happy that I did. I am going to continue using my current set up for as long as it works for me. I also realised that if I got excited about using my Kokeshi dividers again I should probably just order a new set of them in personal size!
Did you have a new year wobble? Did you change your planner or planning system for 2015 or have you stuck with what was working for you? I would love to know!

Oh yeah, except I've added in a Bullet Journal and Midori to the mix. I've used a personal size for nearly two years, but for some reason I feel like making a change. I keep wondering why since I like what I have going on. I have three personal Filofaxes which I love, and two A5s. I'm lucky in that I can swap around in either size and have the same binders (minus an A5 purple Malden) so that's not an issue. I just really don't like the bulk of carrying an A5, but the page size of an A5 seems way too small. Enter the Midori. But I don't like it as well because the booklets won't just sit open on my desk without help, like a Filofax will. I like the Moleskine For a bullet journal, but I don't like the lack of forward planning. Just last night I was making notes about Mother's Day on the proper page in my Filofax. So I don't know what I want to do. I have a problem with having both A5 and personal Filofaxes. I want to settle on one size and then liberate the other one. I just have to decide what's best. Hopefully I'll be able to do that soon.
ReplyDeleteWow Lori that's a lot going on! I hope you can figure it all out soon and find what works for you.
DeleteOh that A5 or personal debate! And why can't you get a slimline A5, which might be the solution? I'm in personal or pocket, merely because I need the portability! But the dividers are gorgeous and well worth getting in personal size.
ReplyDeleteIt is an ongoing struggle within the planner community isn't it? I'm thinking about personal size inserts that fold out to double the width like DIYFish's might be an answer?
DeleteI'm going to order the dividers when the shop reopens ;)
I have these "wobbles" all the time - darn you, Instagram!
ReplyDeleteBut I think that's the beauty of ring-bound planners, is that there are so many options, not only for the outside looks, but what you can put inside. There was a hashtag going around a bit ago, the #plannerstack and so many people have so many different uses for planners!
I'm glad you got yourself sorted, though - I would have been tempted as well! But the personal size really is just about perfect. :)
Jessica Instagram is always tempting me with something new!! It's terrible lol!
DeleteThank you for posting this, I just went through the same thing and thought I was the only one! I ended up with the teal version of that same filofax you got except that I ordered it from your side of the pond. It is travelling to California as I type. So happy I didn't go bigger, less really is more! Happy Planning! xo
ReplyDeleteGina I think it's something everyone goes through at least once, the grass is always greener right? ;)
DeleteI hope your Original makes it over to you quickly!
I'm new to using a planner so bought a coil bound at Walmart for less than $2 back in October to "try it out". It has room up to August at least; I did debate on getting a "new" one for 2015 to run January to December. In the end I'm keeping what I have until it's out of room.
ReplyDeleteThat makes sense Cassie :)
DeleteI've printed my inserts on December, made everything ready for 2015 on a Trifold Traveler's Notebook that I got as a gift for myself. Now I'm trying to be more organize and regular with my videos and blog, and I'm staring AGAIN to my A5 Fussion but I have said I will stay with one planner for 6 months. It's hard...
ReplyDeleteThe problem with personal and A5, at least for me was the weight and the fact that I'm currently without a job so I don't need all the space.
Now I don't know what to do and it's anoying and sad... Instagram it's a huge problem when it comes to pretty pictures and how others work with their planners.
Elizabeth I hope you manage to figure things out soon, it's horrible when you want to get organised but can't find the best way to do it.
DeleteI completely agree about instagram, there's so many pictures of beautiful planners and how they are set up its easy to get distracted by them and think you're not doing it properly but as long as you are getting everything done that you need to then I think that is the most important thing.
I keep wondering Bout going back to an A5 too...
ReplyDeleteIt's like a planner itch isn't it Anna!
DeleteI changed my binder but no way am I changing size!
